TCONB ( TN1394B or TN1394C) Module
The TCONB module is the controller for the CO SAM128. The functions of this module are listed below:
- Acts as an interface between the trunk module and the TERM32 boards.
- Control of the node, Time Division Multiplexer (TDM), and download buses.
- Initializes the trunk module
- Downloads and controls up to 16 processor stations located on the TERM32 Modules.
- Receives the primary download from the node for downloading to the TERM32 modules.
- Accumulation and reporting of status data for the CO SAM128.
- The TCONB module emulates the node clock, switch and integral control computer functions for the CO SAM128.
All of the functions listed are transparent to the user. The TCONB module only
communicates with the integral control computer and the stations that control
the user ports. The TCONB module does not use an I/O distribution board.
TERM32 (UN315) Module
The TERM32 module can interface with terminals, host computers, PCs, or modems.
This board may provide 32 serial, asynchronous, full-duplex ports that run at s
peeds up to 19.2 Kbps. It may also provide 32 serial, synchronous, full-duplex
ports that run at speeds up to 9.6 Kbps. The TERM32 board also supports Autobaud detect.
In the asynchronous mode, the TERM32 module optionally supports XON/XOFF flow control
and clear to send and request to send (CTS/RTS) flow control. It supports odd, even
and no parity features. In the synchronous Data Carrier Equipment (DCE) mode, the
TERM32 generates the transmit and receive clocks, and in the synchronous Data Terminal
Equipment (DTE) mode, it accepts synchronized transmit and receive clocks.
There five types of diagnostic loop-around tests provided for this module. These will
be discussed later in this document. I/O connections to the TERM32 modules are made through
twenty-two DBMini50-pin connectors on the rear panel of the CO SAM128. The relationship
between the TERM32 modules and I/O connections are shown in the following tables.
Trunk Modules
T1-TRUNK (TN1392) Module
The T1-TRUNK module provides long distance high or medium speed, point to point
communication from the CO SAM128 over common carrier equipment to the supporting node.
The supporting node utilizes the complementary T1-TRUNK module (TN1015).
This module supports a maximum of 512 virtual circuits, with 504 available for users
and 8 for control. Actual virtual circuit capacity is a function of user traffic
characteristics and speed of the CO SAM128 to node connecting link.
The CO SAM128 T1-TRUNK module does not have a corresponding I/O distribution board
but comes equipped with a module to Data Service Unit (DSU) connecting cable that
provides a 37 pin RS-449 type receptacle connector labeled J12. RS-422 data and
clocking signals are used along with RS-232C control lead signals for this trunk connection.
HS-TRUNK (TN1391) Module
The HS-TRUNK module is installed in the CO SAM128 to provide limited distance,
high speed, point to point communication over a fiber-optic link to support the node.
The supporting node uses a complementary node HS-TRUNK module.
This module supports a maximum of 512 virtual circuits, 504 for users and the
remaining for control. The high speed link is capable of running at 8 Mbps on
the optical fibers up to a maximum distance of three km.
The HS-TRUNK module is a simple state machine, not programmable. There is a CRC
check to detect bad frames, which are discarded. Error correction and re-transmission
are the responsibility of either the interface modules or the high level protocol involved.
The recommended fiber cable is a multimode fiber (62.5/125mm) cable terminated with
ST style connectors.
I/O connections are made through the rear panel with access to the CEY1 I/O distribution board.
SAMSL (MC1D090A1B) Module
The SAMSL module is the wire interface at each end of a DDS or analog transmission
facility connecting a Datakit® II VCS or BNS-2000 node and a SAM. It supports EIA
RS-232C connections at 9.6 or 19.2 Kbps and V.35 connections at up to 56 Kbps.
It also provides software for boot-up diagnostics, loop diagnostics and channel selection.
The SAMSL I/O connections include:
- V.35 - The CEY2 I/O-DB provides one 34 pin, Winchester-type, V.35 DTE receptacle connector accessed from the rear panel. DSUs are required.
- RS-232C - The CEY3 I/0-DB provides a 25 pin subminiature RS-232C DTE receptacle connector accessed form the rear panel. DSUs are used in this configuration.
SAMDL (MC1D106A1) Module
The SAMDL module is a wire interface at the CO SAM128 end of a DDS or analog transmission
facility. It connects to a SAMML in the node. It supports two EIA RS-232C port connections.
The SAMDL I/O connection is through a CEY4 I/O-DB. It provides one 25-pin subminiature,
receptacle connector. It uses an ED5P055-31, G219 cable to convert from a single 25-pin
RS-232C plug subminiature to two, 25-pin plug subminiature connectors.
Controls and Indicators
Faceplate controls and indicators are used to monitor and control the CO SAM128 modules.
There are similar faceplates on the TERM32, TCONB and trunk modules. The power supplies
have no indicators but are equipped with test points to verify the output voltages.
TERM32 Module
The TERM32 module contains two indicator lights and a trace channel connection.
Power Supplies
The AC and DC power supplies provide no indicators on the faceplates. There are four terminals provided as test points to measure the output voltage for each voltage.
Output voltage can be measured using a high impedance DC voltmeter.

From this point on follow the standard procedures for entering the remaining parameters for the SAM
module, the associated boards, and their ports.
Upgrade of an existing SAM64 to a SAM128
When upgrading a SAM64, and the associated database, to a SAM128 the following
procedure is to be used to install the software patch that allows for the conversion of the
existing database of the SAM64 to the SAM504 with only boards 1-4 supported.
Installation Procedure
This procedure assumes the active controller is 0 and the active disk is 0. To confirm the operational
state enter the "dstat cc" command. If the ACTIVE CONTROL COMPUTER is not 0, or the
ACTIVE DISK is not 0, change the operational state to make it so. If there is a MRCM, recovery
must be configured to off. The node must be running Ver.3 R5.0 or R6.0. For R5.0 a 40 megabyte
tape cartridge is provided containing the patch. A 4mm DAT cartridge is provided for R6.0. The
steps in this section read the patch from the tape and install the Control Computer copy process
in the correct directory on the disk.
- At the CCO> prompt enter utilsh
- At the UTILITY prompt enter cd bin/copy
- At the UTILITY prompt enter dkcsh ( you are now in /dkcproc/bin/copy dir)
- At the DKC$ prompt, enter the following sequence of commands to read the Copy process from tape:
- cpio -icmav < /dev/Tape1 (or Tape0 depending on your configuration)
- sum cbmmodule
- exit
- The output of the sum command in contains the checksum, the number of blocks, and the file
name. The checksum is the first number in the output. Verify that the checksum for the
cbmmodule file is 53916 for V3R5.0, and 54260 for V3R5.0. If the checksum does not match,
repeat Step 'b'. If the checksum still does not match call 908-218-0500 ext31 or ext18.
If the checksum matches properly, the new Copy process phase of this procedure is complete
and you should continue with the activation phase.
Software Patch Activation
Utilize the following procedure to activate the patch:
- At the CCO> prompt move the database configuration of the existing SAM64 to an empty slot and
make note of the new slot number. The move command is: move module present slot new slot - eg:
mv mo 46 177 ( slots 46 and 117 are arbitrary slots picked for this example, however they will be
used for the remainder of this procedure). Your slots will vary depending on you particular configuration.
- At the CCO> prompt enter utilsh
- At the UTILITY prompt enter cd bin/copy
- At the UTILITY prompt enter mv module module.orig
- At the UTILITY prompt enter mv cbmmodule module
- At the UTILITY prompt type exit
- At the CCO> prompt type copy mod 117 46. This will install the SAM504 configuration onto slot 46.
- At the CCO> prompt type change mod 117 and increase the board count from 2 to 4.
- At the CCO> prompt enter utilsh
- At the UTILITY prompt enter cd bin/copy
- At the UTILITY prompt enter rm module
- At the UTILITY prompt enter mv module.orig module
- At the UTILITY prompt enter sync
Backout Procedure
To backout the software patch on the active controller, use the following commands:
- At the CCO> prompt enter dvdelete mod 46. This will remove the SAM504 configuration from the database.
- At the CCO> prompt enter mv mod 117 46. This will return the SAM64 original configuration to the original slot 46.
NOTE: When you have completed the procedure successfully, you may use the dvdelete command to remove the data from slot 117.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
CO SAM128 Diagnostics
Diagnostics can be classified as online or offline and as module, board, or port
diagnostics. Module diagnostics test the link in both the node and the TCONB.
Board diagnostics test the integrity of a particular TERM32 circuit board in the
online and offline states. Port diagnostics test the integrity of a specific port
and the interface cabling connected to the port.
When the module is being tested at the module level, there are actually three
circuit packs that are tested.
- The installed trunk module in the local node
- The installed trunk module in the SAM
- The TCONB module in the CO SAM128
To run diagnostics on the CO SAM128, the commands must be entered at the node and the
slot number of the CO SAM128 trunk board must be known.
CO SAM128 Offline Diagnostics
To execute offline diagnostics on the CO SAM128 the node console is required and
the module must be out of service.
Diagnostics may run on the module.
(diag SAM offline module)
Diagnostics on the board (Module must be in service)
(diag SAM offline board)
Diagnostics on the cabling (Module must be in service)
(diag SAM offline cabling)
CO SAM128 Online Diagnostics
To perform the CO SAM128 online diagnostics, the node console must be used.
Module (Module must be in service)
diag sam online module
Port (Module and port must be in service and the port must be out of service)
diag sam online port
Trunk diagnostics
The link between the node and the CO SAM128 can be tested using the diag
samtrk command from the node console. This link can be either the HS-TRUNK,
T1-TRUNK, SAMSL or SAMDL module.
The five possible tests include:
